Our Evolution
The vast majority of seafood harvested globally is harvested using ethical labor practices that are in line with international labour standards and protocols, both legal and voluntary, to ensure proper treatment of crews. Recognizing the need to provide additional assurance to seafood buyers, the seafood community aimed to create a program similar to those that exist for third-party certifiers of food safety. With that in mind, a diverse range of stakeholders and technical experts came together to craft the FISH Standard.
In March 2025, the Consumer Goods Forum formally recognized FISH as meeting the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative Benchmark (SSCI) The rigorous SSCI benchmark process assesses the certification program’s standard, as well as its management and governance, against 140 criterion to ensure it is operating in a credible and transparent manner.
